Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

 Nationally, more than 2.6 million grandparents are raising grandchildren, according to the US Census. 

4,672 grandparents/caregivers in the St. Louis area are responsible for the basic needs of their grandchildren.

AARP Fact Sheet provides information for both the state and national levels of raising grandchildren.  The GrandFacts include state-specific data and programs, information about foster care, public benefits, educational assistance and state laws.


University of Missouri's GrandFamilies page has a live hotline, support groups and links helping enhance the lives of Grandparents raising Grandkids.


American Grandparents Association, connects and nurtures families  through resources and articles. An AGA membership offers a wide variety of benefits for older adults 50+ including health, money, family and travel. 

Generations United

Grandfamilies State Law and Policy Resource Center serves as a national legal resource in support of grandfamilies within and outside the child welfare system including state laws and policies affecting grandfamilies.

Specialized Funding for Grandparents

Aging Ahead has specialized funding to help grandparents with the responsibility of raising grandkids.  To qualify for financial assistance the Older Americans Act requirements must be met:

  • a grandparent caregiver is a grandparent or step-grandparent of a child, or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption
  • 55 years of age or older
  • lives with the child
  • is the primary caregiver of the child because the biological or adoptive parents are unable or unwilling to serve as the primary caregiver of the child
  • has a legal relationship to the child, has legal custody or guardianship, or is raising the child informally
